Why Does My Air Conditioner Smell Like Mildew?

If you turn your AC on only to smell mildew, you are probably wondering where this smell is coming from. If the air smells musty or like laundry that has been left wet in the washing machine for too long then, you may in fact have a mildew problem. Some mildew issues can be solved with a little investigation and cleaning, while other mold problems may be more complicated and you will need a professionals advice.

Mildew or mold can cause many health problems so it is best to get on top of the source of the smell as soon as possible. To eliminate the musty, moldy smell, you will need to find what is causing the mold build up and then work to eliminate the problem.

Below are several things that could be contributing to the mildew scent you smell.

Drip Pan

The mildew smell you are smelling may in fact be mildew in your AC system. Start by checking that the drip pan does not have stagnant water sitting in it. If it does, then it is possible you have a blockage in the condensate drain line. If the drip pan where the condensation runs too is not draining correctly then unblocking the clog will help. You can then wash the pan with bleach and dry thoroughly. If the condensate drain line is the problem, then replacing the line should eliminate further problems as well as the smell. To be sure you are eliminating all mold you may want to clean your evaporator coils as well. You can use bleach and water and soak the coils for 10 minutes or more. You can use a fan to dry out any parts or take out remaining moisture left in the AC unit.

Ducts and Vents

Another place the mildew smell may be coming from is your ducts and vents. If you have high humidity levels in your home the mold can grow anywhere and become a problem quickly. The best way to make sure you don't have mold in the vents is to have a professional come out and inspect your vents, if it is established you have mold growing in the vents then you can having them professionally cleaned is the best way to eliminate the issue.

System Size

One thing you may also want to consider is that your AC system may be too big for the size of your home. When this happens the AC system brings new air in so quickly that the air going through your AC is not dehumidified properly. Too much moisture in your home can cause mold to grow and this can give a musty smell. Check around areas such as windows and door and clean off any mold with a good mold removal spray, then contact a AC specialist to see if installing a smaller unit may help.
